German: Adjectives

Adjectives usually go in front of their nouns. But you just can't use the dictionary form of an adjective, it has to be declined, with an ending.

after der: -e
after (feminine) die: -e
after das: -e
after die: -en

the new car: der neue Wagen
the new newspaper: die neue Zeitung
the new radio: das neue Radio
the new tables: die neuen Tische

after (masculine) ein: -er
after eine: -e
after (neuter) ein: -es

a new car: ein neuer Wagen
a new newspaper: eine neue Zeitung
a new radio: ein neues Radio

However, if an adjective is in a predicate, it gets no ending.

German: Verb Conjugation - Present

All verbs in German (except sein) end in -en except if the historically ending in el or er and the e was dropped. To conjugate a verb, you drop this ending to get the stem. German has no present progressive, the present is just used.

Verb Endings

ich -e
du -st
er -t
wir -en
ihr -t
sie -en

Spielen (to play)

ich spiele
du spielst
er spielt
wir spielen
ihr spielt
sie spielen

Verbs whose stems end in -d or -t add a connecting e between the end of of the stem and the verb ending.

Arbeiten (to work)

ich arbeite
du arbeitest
er arbeitet
wir arbeiten
ihr arbeitet
sie arbeiten

There are stem-chagig verbs. Changes occur in 2nd/3rd person sigular.

fahren (to travel)

ich fahre
du fährst
er fährt
wir fahren
ihr fahrt
sie fahren

lesen (to read)

ich lese
du liest
er liest
wir lesen
ihr lest
sie lesen

nehmen (to take)

ich nehme
du nimmst
er nimmt
wir nehmen
ihr nehmt
sie nehmen

Vocabulary
